Newspaper ArticleOn May 31, 1985 a ceremony was held outside the Manatee County Courthouse, in memory of the 30 Manatee County citizens who lost their lives during the Vietnam War. William Edmond White was one of those young men. The article was published in the May 31, 1985 edition of the Bradenton Herald as found in newspapers.com. The article mentions/quote Willima's parents (end of second column and third column): "All day Monday, Pauline White, mother of Corporal William Edmund White III, had her mind on her son. Billy White, an Army Infantry soldier and paratrooper, died on January 30, 1968 in South Vietnam. The Manatee High graduate had been in that country only eight weeks when he was killed in combat. Billy's father, longtime Bradenton physician, William E. White Jr., said Billy was buried a day before his 21st birthday after nearly a year as a soldier. He was the only son and had two sisters. "We regard his as a hero who served his country," said White. "He volunteered and enjoyed it very much. It was his decision. I was very proud of him. He didn't have to go, but that's what he wanted to do. It's very unfortunate that he didn't come back." He had completed two years of college and his parents envisioned a medical career for him, but he volunteered anyway. Mrs. White said she was proud of Billy, but naturally she tried to talk him out of his decision to join the Army. "It's very hard to even talk about it now," she said. "It makes me extremely nervous to talk about it. I never got over it. I never expect to." 9/18/2024 3:44:24 PM
