He served as a LT with Alpha Company. Merrill was killed in action in the early morning hours of September 6, 1968 during a cordon operation of Ap Trang Dau. Merrill was from Mesa, Arizona and was twenty-four years of age. He is buried at Mountain View Memorial Gardens, Mesa, Arizona.
