Major Scharnberg and the 3/187th Battalion Commander, LTC Sutton were killed in action on March 17, 1971 when the observation helicopter in which they were riding, crashed into the side of a mountain, west to northwest of Khe Sahn Combat Base. Ronald was from Newport, Arkansas and was twenty-nine years of age. He is buried at Walnut Grove Cemetery, Newport, Arkansas. His name is etched on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall, Panel 4W, Line 56. RIP soldier! Never forget! Never forgotten! Photo obtained from the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund - Wall of Faces.
