He served with Alpha Company. Melvin lost his life on March 6, 1968 due to accidental drowning. He had been observed washing his clothes along the Song Be and apparently fell in. Melvin's place of residence was listed as Compton, California but he was born and raised in New Jersey. Melvin was twenty years of age. He is buried at Midway Green Cemetery, Matawan, New Jersey.
