He served with Bravo Company, 3/187th. John was killed in action on May 11, 1969 on a combat operation during the battle of Dong Ap Bia/Hamburger Hill. John was from Loudon, Tennessee and was twenty-one years of age. He is buried at Lakeview Cemetery, Lenoir City, Tennessee.
